Regeneration: The New Doctor

The new season of Doctor Who has started! (warning: minor spoilers below)

This episode was enjoyable and fairly forgettable but showed a lot of potential for Thirteen.

There is a definite shift in the Doctor’s character. Seemingly, they are going for a weird, genius, Eleven type of Doctor again – which I am all for. Having a kooky, wild, genius of a Doctor is always something I can get behind, especially after the grumpy grandpa vibes from Twelve. Do not get me wrong, I loved Peter Capaldi’s performance, but a slightly less grumpy Doctor will be a nice break.

It will be interesting to see how the show will continue to evolve over this season. There were a few moments in the show which seemed to show the writers making steps to, ever so slightly, separate itself from previous seasons. Thirteen making her own sonic screwdriver to completely replace the one that has been at the Doctor’s side since the reboot, even if it gets remodeled every regeneration was the most noticeable, was a baby step away from previous regenerations.

Thirteen has a lot of possibilities (and had huge ratings). I enjoyed Jodie Whittaker’s performance. Companion wise, I have mixed feelings. Their story was interesting in the first episode and it took a darker turn than what you normally see in Doctor Who. It immediately felt like they will be pushing Yasmin and Ryan together, and I am not sure if that will grow tiresome. I am never happy when the writers force a coupling. If the writers can avoid a forced pairing, the characters could play off each other fantastically.

Overall, I enjoyed the episode and am looking forward to seeing what comes next.
